The Front Door That Hits Me On My Way Out

If the multi-toned yellow, beige, and pink walls in my hallways aren't bad enough, the sage front door really hits you on the way out...and not in a good way.
It's time to break out the paint, in a really big way.

I love a great paint-over, in half a day you can have an entirely different space! See this awful before of my entry hallway? *gag* Now do you see what I mean by bad multi-toned colors?

Sadly the door from the outside is nothing special either. It really lacks personality and style...not the greatest first impression when guests come a'knocking.

My front door is getting a much needed style boost with this fantastic new product from Modern Masters called Front Door Paint. They have this really neat App for iPhone and Android  that allows you to see the color in action before committing. Perfect for a person like myself with huge paint commitment issues. I usually have to paint an entire wall before I know whether I like the hue or not... this App allows me to make a choice without having to paint half the door 3-4 times!

I chose a stunning blue called Peaceful from their emotion based color wheel selection...after all, with three kids, I need all the peace I can get! *chortle* That and I'm just a sucker for all things blue...

I realize that it is unconventional to paint the door both inside and out the same color, but why not use your paint to its fullest? Waste not want not... Plus I love this paint! It goes on easily, dries quickly, never fades, and there is enough to paint several doors! So painting the inside and out seemed like a no-brainer.

2 hours later, I have a new door inside and out, and another 3 hours later my hallways stopped looking like someone puked in my house. I selected a light grey for my hallways to match my new "peaceful" vibe.

Well, what do you think? Huge difference right?
I still have plans to swap out the light fixtures, and perhaps do a little accessorizing both inside and out, but I may stop at this paint-over for a little while and just enjoy it as is!

If you want to give your front door an update, Front Door Paint is available at selected Lowe’s and Ace Hardwares as well as online via Amazon or the Modern Masters online shop.

If you are loving my new front door, I have great news for you... you could be the owner of your very own selection of Front Door Paint!! I'm running a giveaway right here on the blog! Someone is about to up the ante on their exterior. ;)

Etsy Love - Lavinia's Craft Shop

When a friend of mine recently added entrepreneur to her title of wife and homeschooling super-mom, I could relate to the excitement, anxiety, and hopefulness of such a new venture.
Which is why I was thrilled to to lend my photography skills to help her set up shop...well that and any excuse to play house and dress-up with her lovely creations (and wish I owned them all). We had such a great time with our photo shoot!

This got me seeing Etsy in a whole new light, and now I think I may have slight Etsy obsession *grin*. So every Thursday for the next couple months I'll be featuring an Etsy shop I've fallen in love with! Not only do you get to ogle incredible finds by talented artisans, but at the end of this series I'll be hosting a mass giveaway of many of the beautiful featured items!  Are you squealing yet? If you aren't, you will be when you see the drool-worthy items in the giveaway! Keep an eye open, and follow along each Thursday...

Today, I'm excited to introduce my good friend Sandy and her brand new shop, Lavinia's Craft Shop! Shooting her beautiful goods was lots of fun for me, I wanted everyone to be able to see her craftsmanship in sharp view.

Meet Sandy |  Owner, Crafter
I am a homeschooling mom who loves the Lord. I decided to come out of the workforce after 15 years because I wanted to be home with my children. Every day I wake up and  I thank the Lord for giving me the ability to stay home with my two beautiful daughters.

I first got into crafting about 20 years ago when my sister taught me how to crochet, and I have been crocheting ever since! It has been my dream for the past 20 years to establish my own crafting business. I am so proud to say that with the support of my husband and patience of my children it is finally coming to fruition!

My favorite past times are crafting, singing, and spending time with God, friends, and family!
~Sandy

Thanks for sharing Sandy! What she hasn't told you is what a hardworking vivacious lady she is! Full of personality and spunk, always putting others first, she deserves to finally follow her dreams!
I had a hard time choosing which of her items to feature, but I managed to narrow it down to a few of the items I swoon over the most. *lopsided grin*  Oh, what can I say? You know me, I'm a sucker for great designs, colors, and textures! Uh, have you seen the throw pillow in the first picture? I'm SO in love with that throw pillow. At $18 it is a steal, and if you don't buy it, I might! *wink*

Well, what did I say? Doesn't Sandy make some of the cutest items? You should see me strutting around in her wear-ables. *grin* You'll definitely want to visit to her shop before the fall season starts, she has the cutest scarfs, wraps, and afghans!

She also makes lovely home goods, and -exciting news- you could be the new owner of this gorgeous coaster set! Yes you! Keep an eye open for the finale of the series, you won't want to miss all the drool-worthy items you can win.

I'm very proud of my friend Sandy, she has shown great courage, determination, and hopefulness in this new venture. She's been committed to giving her all to her family, working hard homeschooling her girls, being a force in her community for good, and finally she is able to pursue her dreams!  I would really love it if you showed her some "Etsy Love" and followed her shop on Etsy and Facebook.

It's Headboard Week At Remodelaholic!

Today I'm excited to be over at Remodelaholic sharing an easy door-turn-headboard tutorial!

I love the idea of dressing up a bed, then throwing myself right into the midst of it's beautiful comfort. The best way to have a well dressed bed? Start with a headboard! Don't just think of headboards as style, think of them as comfort... if you like to end your day cuddled up to your honey in bed, giggling at a great comedy together, or crying on your darling's shoulder during a drama, then a nice cusion-y headboard should be high on your list of to-DIY's!

I'm sharing an easily customizable headboard you can make for yourself very inexpensively. See my tutorial for this headboard here on Remodelaholic

Don't forget to take a look at the entire week of inspirational headboards, and get in on the action by linking up your own DIY headboard! Just scroll to the bottom of my tutorial on Remodelaholic (or via the Headboard Week intro post here), and link up for a chance to be featured on Remodelaholic's Saturday evening round-up!

Pinspired Entry to Hallway Spaces

In my opinion hallways are valuable real estate and should be treated as such, that means I want to make the most of it! I may not always be able to use my halls for storage, but always the gallery lover, I believe halls can sport oodles and oodles of gorgeous art at the very least!
I have found lots of great inspiration on Pinterest I can apply to my own hall space!

This first space goes to show that it doesn't take much to create a functional and beautiful space. I love the board and batten, and adding hooks at your entry hall space is such a practical use of wall space! Jenna Sue shares all the details to accomplish this project on her blog, this gal has got taste and talent!

I love the idea of a narrow piece of furniture in the hall to create a beautiful and functional vignette...presuming you have large open hall spaces of course.

This home is incredible. IN.CRED.IBLE. John B. Murray Architecture is the force behind this stunning home, but you can visit Casa Tres Chic and see a round-up of some of the most stunning rooms in this home. However, since we are talking about entry and hall inspiration, these next two photos from this home are...well let's just say I want those spaces in my home. Huh, who would have thought that I could covet a hallway?

This would be the ideal use of a hall space; tons of extra storage under a staircase! Such a brilliant use of commonly wasted space!

This hallway space is the perfect image to leave you with. It incorporates the best elements of everything... storage, display, lighting, and beauty at it's finest!

June's Highlights and Happenings

Last week my camera and I enjoyed taking photos in nature rather than indoors for a change. My family and I went on a weekend away with our church for a camping trip! The hubby and girls spent most of the weekend playing with fire, and looked at me like I was the strange one for taking tons of pictures of flowers. We had a good time, and I now have a few new prints for my walls.

Haven Bound
In less than two weeks I'll be on my way to my first ever blog conference!! Aaaaaahhhh, I can't wait! Sadly I can only stay the first two days, so any fellow bloggers planning to be at the Haven Conference in Atlanta, be sure to catch me on Thursday afternoon and Friday. I'm not sure how I'm going to cram in all the gab sessions, meet & greets, and wide eye'd star-struck drooling I'm planning on...but where there's a will there's a way! *grin*
I'll try and fill ya'all in on my adventure when I get back. In the meantime, want a little hint at what my business cards look like? I've cooked up a little something-something besides your typical business card. Ok, just the teeniest of peeks... if you really want to see it, you'll have to wait until I get back (or hunt me down at Haven and get one of your own!). *wink*

In Case You Missed It...
This past month I finally updated my Laundry room! I've shared everything but what the insides of my cabinets look like...but no worries, that will come soon enough. In the meantime, here are all the laundry room related posts that occurred this month, just in case you missed it.

Next Month's Makeover
The halls through one's home may not seem like a particularly important space...but it is the halls that connect our beautiful rooms, so why ignore them as spaces? This month I'll be sharing how I updated the hallways and part of the entry in my home.
I hate to leave you with this hideous picture, but at least now you'll know just how desperately these halls needed a makeover.

Upcoming Series
I'm introducing a new mini-series on the blog for the month of July and August. Etsy Love! Yes, I've been bitten by the Etsy bug, and I'm eager to share the beautiful finds I've stumbled upon! Every Thursday for the next 8 weeks I'll be featuring a shop that has captured my heart. And hoo boy have I got some great news for you... there will be a great big giveaway at the end of the series compliments of some of the featured shops! Be sure to follow along, you just might discover your new favorite home good. ;)
Have a lovely July! I hope it is filled with beauty, brightness, and lots of fireworks! ;)

Laundry Room Reveal

I'm SO happy with my laundry room. It functions like a dream (finally), and rather than being the blight just off my dining room, it is now a space I can allow my eyes to linger on rather than rush past. Ha, I no longer have to be embarrassed if I forgot to close the laundry room door when guests take a seat for dinner! I call that major progress.

Remember what it looked like before? That ironic dingy mustard paint color on the walls... I mean c'mon, who wants to think about dingy mustard yellow when trying to get bright clean laundry?? Here is the laundry room right before we moved in, and my original plan (which clearly got tweaked a bit!):

Like most spaces in my home my laundry room has been a bit of a process. My first update was painting the walls and bringing in front loaders, then nothing for a year-and-a-half. Until that glorious day a month ago when I saw my dream flooring on sale at Home Depot! Travertine-like flooring I could lay myself? Uh, you should have seen my giddy dance right there in the Home Depot aisle.

Then everything just seemed to fall into place...from finding these sparkly chrome frames, and prints at 25 cents (total...not each!), to finding the perfect accessories and that gorgeous Kichler light fixture.

The Practical Side of the Laundry Room
I like a beautiful space as much next decorating junkie...but this mama lives here, and I am all about the practical side of decorating!

The best part of this laundry room is the oodles and oodles of storage! After all, where else am I going to store all my household cleaners?

Swapping out the old cabinet knobs for these modern pulls helped update the space without removing cabinetry.

A row of medium sized cabinets across the top hold detergent, cleaners, and everything you can possibly need for the healthy home. I also have four large baskets that sit atop the cabinets to store extra tissue, toilet paper, and paper towels. Then the small pantry-like cabinet to the left of the dryer houses brooms, mops, my vacuum, and other cleaning tools...that is an entire post in of itself!

The only items I keep out are frequent use items like these spray bottles containing ingredients for stain removal.

The kids know that the moment they get a stain, they are to spray the stain and place the soiled garment into the laundry utility sink for soaking.

Having a utility sink in the laundry room is FANTASTIC! We clean everything in there... muddy boots, paint brushes, you name it... which is why I installed a trio of hooks right over the sink; it makes the perfect place to allow rags and paint brushes to drip dry.

Atop the washer and dryer I keep my regular use sprays inside a sleek porcelain tray. This is my catch all for miscellaneous items found in pockets, or that need immediate attention on laundry day.

I also a trio of small white dishes for the items that may not need immediate attention, but can house those small items often found in the washer or dryer. Buttons that are discovered in the dryer, but I'm not sure which item of clothing they belong to stay here until the needed.

I also keep three small baskets atop the dryer to store common use items such as a mesh bag for delicate's, rubber gloves, and the all important chore checklist sheets! When the kids come to collect cleaners they also grab the appropriate checklist for the room. By the way, these checklists are a lifesaver! I provide free printables here for you.

So are you wondering where my laundry baskets are? That little green basket can't possibly hold all our dirty laundry, so what's the deal? *grin* Here is my tip for keeping a tidy well-decorated laundry space, and keeping it practical as well!
I use pop-up laundry baskets for dirty clothes, and smaller ones to carry my clean clothes. They are brought out on laundry day and we all bring our hamper/baskets from our various rooms and sort them into these pop-up baskets

At the end of laundry day, I simply fold them flat, and tuck them into the space by the dryer. Safely in their slot until next week and another laundry day! It keeps the floors in my small laundry room clear...very important since this is my indoor path to the garage and I often lug furniture (and tools) through here to be worked on.

The only basket that stays out at all times is this stylish little green basket I got from Home Goods for $12. It collects the dirty rags used to clean windows, wipe up spills, etc. throughout the week. It is allows them to air out, and dry between laundry days.

I store my clean folded rags under the utility sink in this beautiful white basket I embellished with gold spray paint. Chrome may be the main finish in here, but my new favorite thing is to bring in hints of gold or copper in to each space!

I was overjoyed to find these hooks at Target, marked down from $8 to $1!! Adding a couple hooks to temporarily catch the hubby and kids belts, hats, and unwashables they forget to remove before tossing in the laundry hamper.

My mom gave me this nifty little hanging doodad. It hooks over the door, receives hangers (for clothing that needs to air dry, or be hung up straight out of the dryer), then folds down when not in use.

I hope you enjoyed my laundry room tour! I'm lucky to have a space of this size to commit to my laundry, 9'x6' to be exact, and I'm making the most of it! However I have learned that if all I had was the space above my washer and dryer, this is the layout I would go for... open shelving is desperately beautiful, but I love being to adequately store household items and enjoying stylish decor at the same time.
